Paul Glimcher of New York University will hold a neuroeconomics workshop from June 13-15, 2011. The workshop will be held in room BLU-003, from 5-7 pm, on each of the three days. Topics include the theory of positive neuroeconomics and the standard model of choice. He will also give a more general talk on June 16, 2011 at 5 pm (BLU-003).
Philippe Tobler and Christian Ruff will be holding their inaugural lectures on Monday, May 23, 2011 in the Main Auditorium (KOLG-201). Philippe will speak on "Economic value in the brain" from 18:15-19:00 and Christian on "Studying the mind by stimulating the brain" from 19:30-20:15. Donna Harris, University of Cambridge, will be visiting us from February 15-April 30, 2011. Her dissertation focused on the impact of group identity, group size, and social norms on individual behavior within the context of multilateral group interactions. She has been investigating the influence of group membership on the underlying cognitive and neural processes that drive individual pro- and antisocial behavior. Specifically, her work examines whether humans are naturally inclined to conform to group behavior regardless of whether such behavior produces positive or negative outcomes.
Todd Hare assumed his new position as Assistant Professor for Neuroeconomics on November 1, 2010, at the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics, which is strongly affiliated with the SNS Lab. Before that, he was Postdoctoral Scholar in Neuroeconomics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. Welcome, Todd!
Ernst Fehr, Ingolf U. Dalferth, and Jakob Tanner have organized an interdisciplinary research conference on the “Hermeneutic and Methodological Problems in Current Research on Trust,” which will take place from November 5-6, 2010, at the Collegium Helveticum in Zurich.
Philippe Tobler assumed his new position as SNSF Professor on July 1, 2010, at the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics, which is strongly affiliated with the SNS Lab. He is also Associate Professor in the Finance Department at the University of Tilburg, Netherlands. Before that, he was Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. Welcome, Philippe!

Altruism and Compassion in Economic Systems The Mind and Life XX Conference entitled "Altruism and Compassion in Economic Systems: A Dialogue between Economics, Neuroscience and Contemplative Sciences" co-organized by Tania Singer took place from April 9-11, 2010, Kongresshaus, Zurich. In addition to His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, a number of other leading minds who are working on the foundations of economic decision making, cooperation, prosocial behavior, empathy, and compassion spoke at the conference (including Ernst Fehr and Tania Singer from the University of Zurich).
Neuroeconomics: Decision Making and the Brain The Association of American Publishers recently announced the winners of the 2009 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (the "PROSE Awards"). Neuroeconomics: Decision Making in the Brainby Paul Glimcher, Colin Camerer, Ernst Fehr, and Russell Poldrack received the Award for Excellence in Social Sciences and was the winner in the Economics category. This book is the first edited reference that examines the science behind neuroeconomics, including how it influences human behavior and societal decision making from a behavioral economics point of view.

The European Research Council has awarded Tania Singer 1.5 million euros for her project entitled "Plasticity of the empathic brain: Structural and functional MRI studies on the effect of empathy training on the human brain and prosocial behaviour." This was a highly competitive grant: Of the 9,167 applications for an ERC Starting Grant submitted, only 3% were funded.
